Sister Eleanor (Eugene) Wartman, OSB, entered peacefully into eternal life March 6, 2025, fulfilling her baptismal call. She was 93 years old, having lived her monastic profession for 75 years. She was born July 25, 1931, to Bernard & Hilda (Schneider) Wartman. She grew up in Victoria, MN with siblings Richard, Eugene, Phabe, Mary and Doris and attended grade school there. She graduated from St. Benedict’s Academy in St. Joseph, MN and entered St. Benedict’s Monastery in June 1948. The following year, with five classmates, she transferred to their newly founded monastery of 178 Sisters, St. Paul’s Monastery on Summit Ave. in St. Paul, MN.
Sister Eleanor attended the Diocesan Teachers College in St. Paul and earned a BA degree in Elementary Education from St. Catherine University/University of St. Thomas in St. Paul and St. Cloud State College in St. Cloud, MN. She graduated from St. Mary’s College in Winona with a Master’s Degree in Pastoral Care. By Profession, Sister Eleanor was an elementary school teacher at St. Bernard’s in St. Paul; Assumption, Richfield; St. Anne’s, Minneapolis; St. Hubert’s, Chanhassen; St. Bartholomew, Wayzata. She also served as principal at Assumption and St. Anne’s. After 18 years of teaching in grades 2 through 6, Sister Eleanor ministered in pastoral care at Guardian Angels, Lake Elmo; St. Therese Southwest (The Glenn) Hopkins and Immaculate Heart of Mary Minnetonka. She often shared that every student she taught was her favorite and how blessed she felt to be a part of the lives of parishioners she met in pastoral care.
Sister Eleanor Wartman, OSB Born: July 25, 1931 Professed: July 11, 1949 Died: March 6, 2025 Sister Eleanor served her Benedictine community in leadership as Prioress (1992-1996) and Sub-prioress for 10 years prior to that time. She was elected as councilor in the Monastic Congregation of St. Benedict, of which St. Paul’s Monastery is a member. In addition, she led the Sisters in a 15 year-study that resulted in selling their former monastery building and surrounding land to agencies that provide safety and affordable housing for women and children and seniors. With the continued support of the Sisters and many lay friends, she directed the construction of a new monastery.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Hilda; brother, Rich and wife, Barb; brother, Eugene and wife, Julianna; sister, Doris and husband, Roger; infant sister, Isabel; brother-in-law, George Moore; nephew, Tim Forcier; grand-nephew, Ben Kunze. Sister Eleanor is survived by her sister, Mary Moore; her brother, Phabe and wife, Rita; her devoted nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, friends, her Benedictine Sisters and Oblates of St. Paul’s Monastery.
